Sasha walked 35 km—so you could taste this

In 1989, a Siberian gardener named Sasha walked over 35 kilometers through the Altai Mountains to deliver seeds to Bill McDorman a visiting seed saver. The tomato he shared—early, sweet, and full of flavor—became an heirloom legend. Years later, after suffering a violent attack, Sasha’s story sparked an outpouring of support from gardeners around the world. Today, Sasha’s Altai lives on as a symbol of kindness, endurance, and the power of one seed to change lives.

In 1993, Sasha was attacked and severely beaten while walking home at night. His injuries were extensive, requiring multiple surgeries and leaving him weakened for years. When the seed-saving community learned of his hardship, hundreds of gardeners who had grown Sasha’s tomatoes responded with donations. Organic Gardening Magazine shared the story further, and by the end of 1995, over one million rubles had been sent to support Sasha and his family.
