Paul Robeson is a Russian heirloom tomato variety named in honour of the African-American actor, singer, and civil rights activist, Paul Robeson. He achieved iconic status in Russia due to his activism and unwavering stance during the McCarthy era, where he openly supported pro-Soviet policies. This made him a hero in the former Soviet Union, but it also made him a target of the American government at home.
The "black" beefsteak tomato is characterized by its slightly flattened, round shape, reaching a size of 4 inches. Distinguished by deep, rich hues, it boasts a dusky, dark-red colour with dark-green shoulders, while the centre reveals vibrant red flesh, setting it apart from other varieties. The fruits are exceptionally flavorful, offering luscious, earthy, and exotic tastes, with a well-balanced combination of acidity and sweetness.
